Tests, Results & X-rays

Test Results

We strongly recommend that you use the NHS App to view your test results. It is straightforward to download and register your details. Then, you can communicate your request directly to your health practitioner for processing quickly. Results of blood  and urine tests usually take 7 days , X-rays and ultrasounds up to 14 days, and cervical smears can take up to 4 weeks.  The doctor or nurse will advise as to whether there is any action to be taken. The receptionist can inform you if you need to be seen.

Please note that we do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection. In this respect, we will only give out results to the person they relate to,unless that person has given prior permission for their release to a third party,  if the person themselves is unable to understand the results.

 

Blood Tests

We may ask you to attend for a blood test when a sample of blood is taken for testing in a laboratory. Blood tests have a wide range of uses and are one of the most common types of medical test. For example, a blood test can be used to:

  • assess your general state of health
  • confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection
  • see how well certain organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are functioning

A blood test usually involves the phlebotomist taking a blood sample from a blood vessel in your arm, and the usual place for a sample is the inside of the elbow or wrist, where the veins are relatively close to the surface. Blood samples from children are most commonly taken from the back of the hand. The child’s hand will be anaesthetised (numbed) with a special cream before the sample is taken.

Test: Blood

You can have your blood test done at:

  • Hillingdon Hospital or Mount Vernon hospital -both walk in clinics- Monday to Friday (07:00am-04:30 Mon- Fri)
  • Hesa Centre – Hayes by appointment Tel no:01895 486001
  • Eastcote Health Centre by appointment Tel no: 01895 488810
  • Oak Farm Clinic by appointment Tel no: 01895 484810

Please contact your practice after 1pm to obtain your results.

Blood tests for children are done at special clinics in the area. Appointments will be made via your practice after discussing it with the GP or Practice Nurse.

 

Smear Test

Cervical smears are performed by the practice nurse. The results of the tests take up to four weeks to come back and you will receive your result by letter. If you have not received your result after four weeks, please contact the surgery.

Urine Test

A urine test may be requested for a variety of reasons. If requested by the GP or nurse, you will need to drop a urine sample off in the correct urine bottle (available at the surgery or from a pharmacist). Please ensure it is neatly labelled with your details as any incorrectly labelled bottles will not be tested. Please drop the sample off  to the surgery by 11am Monday-Thursday. This along with the appropriate form will be sent off to the laboratory at Hillingdon hospital.

X-Ray

An X-ray is a widely used diagnostic test to examine the inside of the body. X-rays are a very effective way of detecting problems with bones, such as fractures. They can also often identify problems with soft tissue, such as pneumonia or breast cancer.

If you have a X-ray, you will be asked to lie on a table or stand against a surface so that the part of your body being X-rayed is between the X-ray tube and the photographic plate.

An X-ray is usually carried out by a radiographer, a healthcare professional who specialises in using imaging technology, such as X-rays and ultrasound scanners.
